Cull
The grid
Layouts, selecting, looking closely, full screen, and the filters and sort that narrow a folder.
The grid is where a folder is judged. Choose a folder in the sidebar and its photos fill the window. The count sits in the top bar: 240 FRAMES, or 18/240 FRAMES when a filter is hiding some.
Layouts
m switches between two layouts.
- Uniform gives every photo the same slot.
- Masonry keeps each photo’s real shape, portraits included, so nothing is cropped to fit.
+ and − show fewer or more photos across; with ⇧, they change the margin between them. Reveal reopens on the folder you left, in the grid.
Selecting
A click selects one photo and replaces the selection. ⌘-click adds or removes a photo; ⇧-click selects the range from the last one; ⌘⇧-click adds a range. ⌘A selects everything and ⌘D nothing. The arrow keys move through the grid.
What you do next applies to the selection: rating, adding to the collection, copying and pasting a development, exporting.
Looking closely
Space opens the photo you are on, alone and large, with no panel. It is the Develop view in its quiet form; Space again returns to the grid. The arrow keys move to the next photo without leaving it.
In that view, z steps through three zoom levels: the whole frame, fill, and 100% (⇧z goes the other way). At 100%, drag the photo to move around it. Press and hold on the photo at frame size and a small circular loupe follows the pointer, magnifying the pixels under it; let go and it disappears.
f shows the photo full screen: the window fills the display, with no title bar. Reveal renders the photo at up to 2560 pixels for it. The arrows move to the next photo and 0 to 5 rate it. f, g, Space, Esc or a click leave it.
Esc always steps back: it closes a panel, leaves full screen, and returns to the grid from a single photo or from Editorial.
Filtering and sorting
Two controls in the top bar narrow what the grid shows. They change the view, never the files.
- The star menu filters by rating: Show all, or ≥ 1 ★ up to ≥ 5 ★. Its Quick collection option shows only the photos you have put in the collection (see Ratings and picks). A badge on the button tells you a filter is on.
- The sort menu orders by date: Oldest first or Newest first.
A filter holds while you stay in the folder, including when it is re-indexed, so a folder you are culling at “≥ 3 ★” stays at that level until you change it. Opening another folder shows that folder’s full contact sheet again.
The right-click menu
Right-click a photo for everything you can do with it: Develop, Preview, Show in Finder, Open in any photo editor you have installed, Copy image, Copy and Paste settings, Add to or Remove from collection, Export selection…, AI culling and Publish collection. The key for each is written beside it.
c copies the development of the photo you are on and v applies it to the selection. It is the quickest way to give a whole set the same look.
