Keyboard shortcuts
Every key, by where it works. The same list is in the app, under the REVEAL wordmark or on ? .
Reveal is made to be run from the keyboard. The list is also in the app: press ? (or h), or click the REVEAL wordmark.
Keys are plain letters, with no modifier. They do nothing while you are typing in a field (a caption, a paragraph, a search box) or while a menu or dialog is open, so you never trigger one by writing.
Everywhere
| Key | What it does |
|---|---|
| ? or h | Show or hide the list of shortcuts |
| b | Show or hide the folder panel |
| o | Focus mode: blur and desaturate everything but Reveal |
| l | Switch between light and dark, following the system |
| ⌘, | Settings |
| Esc | Step back: leave full screen, or return to the grid from a single photo or from Editorial. Menus and dialogs close with it too. |
In the grid
Moving and selecting
| Key | What it does |
|---|---|
| Arrow keys | Move through the photos, one at a time (up and down move a whole row) |
| ⇧ + arrows | Extend the selection as you move |
| ⌘ + arrows | Move without changing the selection |
| ⌘Space | Add the current photo to the selection, or remove it |
| ⌘A | Select everything |
| ⌘D | Select nothing |
Layout
| Key | What it does |
|---|---|
| m | Switch between the uniform grid and masonry |
| = (the key labelled +) | Fewer photos across, so they are bigger |
| - | More photos across, so they are smaller |
| ⇧= and ⇧- | A wider or narrower margin between photos |
| g | Show or hide the folder panel (from a single photo or Editorial, it returns to the grid instead) |
Rating and picking
| Key | What it does |
|---|---|
| 1 to 5 | Rate the photo, or every selected photo |
| 0 | Clear the rating |
| q | Add the photo to the quick collection, or remove it |
Doing something with them
| Key | What it does |
|---|---|
| Space | Open the photo, alone and large |
| d | Open the photo in Develop, with its panel |
| f | Full screen |
| c | Copy the photo’s development settings |
| v | Paste those settings onto the selection |
| ⌘C | Copy the photo itself, as an image, to the clipboard |
| r | Develop and export the selection |
| s | Turn Editorial on or off |
In a single photo
Reached with Space (quiet, no panel) or d (with the development panel). Everything above for rating, copying settings and moving still works here. The arrows now move to the previous and next photo.
| Key | What it does |
|---|---|
| Space, Esc or g | Back to the grid |
| d | With no panel open: open it. With the panel open: back to the grid |
| ⇧D | Show or hide the development panel |
| </kbd> or y | Before and after: a tap switches between the developed photo and the photo as the camera shot it, and it stays; hold the key to peek at the original, and letting go brings the edit back. The same on the button next to the stars |
| z | Zoom: frame, then fill, then 100% |
| ⇧z | The same, the other way round |
| ↑ and ↓ | Nudge the setting you changed last (hold ⇧ for bigger steps) |
| ⌘Z | Undo the last edit |
| ⌘⇧Z | Redo it |
Undo and redo apply to the photo that is open. Nudging with the arrows is meant for fine adjustment: change a slider once with the mouse, then use the arrows to tune it without touching the mouse again.
In full screen
f, g, Space, Esc or a click leaves it. The arrows move to the next photo and 0 to 5 rate it.
In Editorial
s turns it on and off. In the composer, typing a caption or a paragraph never triggers a shortcut. Click away from the field and the keys work again.
In the menu bar
Reveal has the usual macOS menus: Import, Develop, Export and Window reach the same actions as the keys and buttons, and Help → Reveal Manual opens this manual.
