Themes

One setting dresses a story: the note, the page on the Garden, and Reveal's own window while you work on it.

A story has a look, and you choose it from a list. There is no colour picker and no font menu: a theme is a complete, designed set (colours, type, spacing) and you pick one.

Choosing a theme

In the Editorial tab of the sidebar, the Theme menu lists the themes. Default is first. Choosing one saves it in the story straight away.

There are 26 to choose from:

2064, Academic, Apex, Avant-Garde, Blueprint, Book, Calm (Anti-Overload), Chalky, Claude, Dev, Documentation, Dyslexia, Editorial, Federal, Forest, Frank, Gallery, High Contrast, Humanist, International, Kernel, Manifesto, Mono, Occult, Reveal and Venetian.

They are the Standard framework’s own themes.

Where it shows

A theme is worn in two places, with the same colours and the same type.

  • On the Garden. The note is published with its theme, and the page is drawn in it.
  • In Reveal. While a folder with a theme is open, the whole window wears it, so you compose the story in the clothes it will have. Leave the folder, and the window goes back to Reveal’s own look.

Themes bring their fonts with them. The first time you use one, Reveal loads it.

In the note

The choice is one line in the note’s header:

theme: forest

The value is the theme’s name in lowercase (avantgarde, calm, contrast, dyslexia, manifeste, forest…). You can type it by hand in any editor; Reveal reads it when it opens the folder. Default simply removes the line, and the window uses Reveal’s own look again.

Older notes

Before themes, a story could carry its own colours and fonts in its header (color-dark-background, font-header, and so on). If an old note’s colours match one of the themes, Reveal recognises it when you open the folder and rewrites the note with theme: instead. An old note whose colours match none keeps its lines as they are, and has no theme.

When you choose a theme, Reveal removes those older lines too, so the note never says two things about its look.

Adjusting a theme

You cannot, and that is on purpose: Reveal offers a choice of themes, not controls for colours and fonts. The themes are defined in the Standard framework, and every one of them is available to every story.
